FAQs - Carpets

Both are excellent options for carpets in bedroom spaces, but they suit slightly different needs. 100% wool carpets are natural, luxurious, and beautifully soft underfoot, perfect for main bedrooms. However, an 80% wool / 20% synthetic blend offers similar comfort with extra durability and stain resistance, making it a smart choice for guest or children’s rooms. In short, 100% wool feels more premium and natural, while 80/20 wool can be a practical and budget-friendly option.

Yes, we offer up to six free samples across our full range, including all of our wool carpets. Samples are sent directly to your home so you can check the colour, pile, and quality in your own lighting before placing an order. Simply click the free sample button on any product page to add it to your basket.

If you’re fitting a carpet yourself, it’s crucial to get the measurements spot on.

Start by measuring the widest point, across the width and the length. Include any alcoves, doorways and window bays. Add at least 10 cm to your measurements to allow for fitting, trimming and any room irregularities.

Read our full guide on measuring rooms for carpet and flooring for more details. You can also check out our blog on how to fit a carpet.

Here at Online Carpets we do not install or fit flooring, we do however deliver great quality carpets all over the UK at the best prices. Although our customers do often have to arrange a third-party fitter, they find that they save a significant amount of money overall when comparing the price of going with a traditional store.

To find a fitter our customers usually use one of the following two websites:

  • NICF - The National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers
  • Yell - Search for a carpet fitter.

Both of these websites allow you to search for carpet fitters in your local town or postcode area.

Vacuum regularly, ideally two to three times a week in busy areas, to prevent dry dirt from working into the pile. For spills, blot immediately with a clean cloth and never rub, as this can spread the stain and damage the fibres. Use a wool-safe carpet cleaner rather than anything bleach-based, which will damage wool. For a deeper clean, a professional carpet clean once every year or two is recommended.

Wool carpet can work in homes with pets, but it does require more careful maintenance than synthetic alternatives. An 80/20 wool-mix is the better practical choice for pet owners who want the look and feel of wool alongside better stain resistance. For homes with very active pets, a stain-resistant polypropylene carpet may ultimately be the more practical option.

Yes, wool is a natural, renewable, and biodegradable fibre, making it one of the most sustainable carpet choices available. Sheep produce a new fleece each year, and wool carpet at the end of its life will biodegrade naturally rather than contributing to landfill in the way synthetic fibres do. It’s also naturally flame-retardant, meaning it doesn’t require the chemical treatments that some synthetic carpets need.

Most wool carpets can be used with underfloor heating, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Always check the specific product's compatibility before purchasing, and use a low-tog underlay to allow heat to transfer effectively to the surface. Follow the manufacturer's recommended maximum temperature guidelines, typically no higher than 27°C at floor level, to avoid any long-term effect on the fibres.

Wool carpet is a natural fibre that offers a softer, more luxurious feel underfoot, excellent insulation, and a longer lifespan with proper care. It's the premium choice for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort and aesthetics are a priority. Polypropylene is a synthetic fibre that is naturally stain-resistant, bleach-cleanable, and available at more accessible price points, making it the practical choice for busy households with children or pets. 80/20 wool carpets offer a middle ground, combining natural wool's warmth and resilience with the improved durability and stain resistance of a synthetic blend.

Wool is a natural protein fibre and, in rare cases, can be susceptible to carpet moth damage, particularly in undisturbed areas such as under furniture or in corners. Many of our wool carpets are treated with moth-resistant finishes to reduce this risk. To protect your carpet, vacuum regularly (including under furniture), keep the room well-ventilated, and deal with any signs of moths with appropriate treatments.

More Info on Wool Carpets

Wool carpets offer timeless style, natural comfort, and outstanding durability, making them a popular choice for homes of all kinds. Crafted from natural fibres, wool carpets feel soft underfoot while providing excellent insulation to help keep your rooms warm and cosy. Naturally resilient and elastic, wool fibres bounce back from foot traffic, helping your carpet maintain its appearance for years while adding a touch of elegance to any space. In addition to their comfort and durability, wool carpets are breathable and hypoallergenic, making them a practical option for busy households. Available in a wide range of colours, textures, and designs, they suit everything from classic interiors to modern living spaces. With their long-lasting quality and natural beauty, a wool carpet is an investment in both comfort and style that will enhance your home for years to come.

Choosing between 100% wool and an 80/20 wool-mix comes down to where the carpet is going and how much use it will see. 100% wool is the more luxurious choice. It’s beautifully soft, naturally elegant, and ideal for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort is the priority.  80/20 wool carpets blend the natural softness of wool with the improved durability and stain resistance of a synthetic fibre, making it a smart choice for busier rooms, guest bedrooms, and households with children or pets. Both are available across our full range, and you can order up to six free samples to compare the feel and colour in your own home before deciding.
