FAQs - Vinyl Flooring
  • Acclimatise your vinyl flooring by unrolling it in the room for at least 24 hours.
  • Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level.
  • Lay the vinyl loosely and allow it to settle, trimming around the edges and obstacles with a sharp knife. For smaller rooms, loose laying is often enough, but for larger areas or to secure the vinyl better, you can use adhesive spray for vinyl or double-sided tape.
  • Always refer to the vinyl's fitting instructions.

Here at Online Carpets we do not install or fit vinyl flooring, we do however deliver great quality lino across the UK. Our customers often save a huge amount buying from us and arranging their own fitting.

To find a vinyl flooring fitter you can use one of the following two websites:

  • Yell - Search for a carpet fitter.
  • NICF - The National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers

Both of these websites allow you to search for lino fitters in your local area.

You can easily cut vinyl flooring using a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. First, you need to measure and mark the vinyl carefully. Leave 5–7 cm of extra vinyl at the edges and make vertical cuts at each corner. Press the lino firmly into the skirting with a blunt tool, then use a sharp knife angled at 45 degrees to trim carefully, leaving about 5 mm extra to avoid cutting too short. Remember to always use a fresh blade for clean results.

You can read our full vinyl fitting guide for a step-by-step walkthrough. Alternatively, you can contact one of our experts who will gladly provide you with advice and answer any questions you may have.

No, vinyl flooring is splash proof and is designed to be water-resistant and can handle everyday spills and moisture. This makes them suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where traditional carpets might be damaged by water. However, it’s still recommended to wipe up standing water quickly to extend the life of the flooring and maintain its appearance.

Herringbone vinyl flooring is sheet vinyl featuring the classic herringbone or zigzag pattern; the same design traditionally associated with parquet wood floors and herringbone tiles, but delivered in a practical, water-resistant vinyl format. Sometimes called chevron vinyl flooring or parquet effect vinyl flooring, it gives you that timeless, characterful look at a fraction of the cost of real wood or tile, and with none of the installation complexity.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle distinction. In a true herringbone pattern, the rectangular shapes meet at a right angle at each end, creating a broken zigzag effect. In a chevron pattern, the ends are cut at an angle so they meet at a sharp point, forming a continuous V shape. In herringbone vinyl flooring, both patterns create a very similar visual result: an eye-catching, dynamic floor that adds depth and interest to any room.

Herringbone vinyl works brilliantly in almost any room in the home. It's particularly popular in hallways and kitchens, where the pattern creates a strong visual statement in a high-traffic space, and in living rooms and dining areas where it adds warmth and character. Because it's water-resistant and easy to clean, it's also an excellent choice for bathrooms and utility rooms. The pattern tends to make smaller rooms feel larger and more dynamic, which makes it especially effective in compact spaces.

Yes, all of our herringbone vinyl flooring is water-resistant and splash-proof, making it well-suited to bathrooms, en-suites, and kitchens where moisture and spills are a regular occurrence. We recommend sealing the perimeter with silicone sealant after fitting to prevent water from working underneath the edges.

Both give you the herringbone pattern, but they differ in construction and feel. Herringbone vinyl sheet flooring comes in a continuous roll, giving a seamless, join-free finish that's particularly practical for bathrooms and kitchens. Herringbone LVT comes in individual click-lock planks, offering a more rigid, premium feel underfoot and very realistic wood or stone aesthetics. Sheet vinyl is typically the more budget-friendly option, while LVT is the better choice when a premium look and feel is the priority. Browse our herringbone LVT range if you'd like to compare.

Our herringbone vinyl flooring range includes a variety of colourways, with oak and wood-effect tones among the most popular. Light oak and blonde wood effects suit contemporary spaces particularly well, while darker tones add warmth and drama. Grey herringbone vinyl flooring is another consistently popular choice, pairing well with both warm and cool interior palettes. Stone and tile-effect herringbone designs are also available for a more traditional look.

More Info on Vinyl Flooring

Herringbone vinyl flooring has become one of the most popular flooring choices in UK homes over the last few years, and it's easy to see why. It delivers the classic parquet aesthetic, a pattern historically associated with period properties and high-end interiors, at a fraction of the cost and with none of the installation complexity of real wood. Whether you're after a warm oak herringbone for a living room or kitchen, a grey or anthracite effect for a contemporary hallway, or something bolder for a cloakroom or utility space, there's a design in our range to suit.

All of our herringbone vinyl is splash-proof and R10 slip-resistant, the recommended safety standard for domestic bathrooms, making it as practical as it is striking. The cushioned foam backing on most of our styles adds a softer, warmer feel underfoot than you'd get from real tiles or stone, and provides a degree of acoustic insulation, too. Resistant to scuffs and scratches, herringbone vinyl handles everyday use in busy homes without the pattern losing its crispness over time. It also pairs beautifully with rugs if you want to layer textures and add warmth to a larger space.

Our herringbone vinyl range comes in a wide selection of colours and effects, from realistic wood-effect designs in light oak, walnut, and grey tones, to tile-effect options for a more traditional look. Browse below, order up to six free samples, and see how the pattern and colour look in your own home before you commit.
